Getting to Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) sits about 15 km south-west of Amsterdam, with a single terminal and three departure halls. However you arrive, the car parks and valet drop-off are clearly signposted from the motorway ring — here's how it fits together.
- By carReach the airport from the A4, A5 and A9 motorways, then follow the P signs to the car park you booked. Every official option — P1, P2, P3, P6 and Smart Parking — plus the valet drop-off is signposted from the ring road. Most flexible for groups and longer trips. ~20 min from A'dam
- By trainSchiphol Airport station is directly beneath the terminal, with direct intercity and international services — about 15 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal. No parking needed, but less flexible for early or awkward departure times. ~15 min by rail
- By taxi or ride-hailDrop-off is right outside Departures. Convenient door-to-door, but metered fares from central Amsterdam add up quickly — often more than a week of pre-booked parking for a return trip. door to door
- By bus & coachThe Amsterdam Airport Express (bus 397) and long-distance coaches stop at the Schiphol Plaza bus station under the terminal — a budget option if you're travelling light and near a stop. from €6
Driving is usually the most flexible choice and, for a group or a longer stay, often the cheapest overall. Compare all 9 options.
Before you fly from Schiphol
How early to arrive
Schiphol advises arriving around 3 hours before an intercontinental flight and 2 hours before a European one. If you're using long-stay or off-site parking, add 15–30 minutes for the free shuttle transfer on top of that.
One terminal, three halls
Schiphol has a single terminal with Departure Halls 1, 2 and 3 — your airline decides which. P1 and P2 are closest to Departures; from long-stay and off-site parking a free shuttle drops you at Schiphol Plaza, in the middle of all three.
Security & what to pack
Keep liquids in containers of 100 ml or less inside one clear resealable bag, have your boarding pass and ID ready, and allow extra time at peak periods. Check your airline's cabin and hold baggage rules before you leave home.
Where to park
Short trips suit covered terminal parking (P1–P3). For holidays, long-stay P6 or Smart Parking — or an off-site park & ride — give the lowest per-day rate.
